We Are the Ship

There is a fantastic photo spread in this week’s issue of Sports Illustrated. No, it’s not the infamous swimsuit issue. It’s a selection of “luminous paintings by Kadir Nelson” that

re-create the power and majesty of the Negro leagues, in a time when some of the games greats played in undeserved obscurity – but with undiminished passion.

Here’s the link to Gallery of the paintings from SI – view paintings.
The photos of the paintings are from We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball by Kadir Nelson published by Jump the Sun/Hyperion c 2008. The SI article by Phil Taylor is great as well. The paintings in SI feature Josh Gibson, Smokey Joe Williams, Jackie Robinson, and Satchel Paige, among others. This is fantastic. Come, baseball fans, justice seekers, art lovers, all.
