One of the things I look forward to about going to Texas is someday having the opportunity to meet my colleague The Rev. Matt Tittle of Bay Area UU Church in Houston. Rev. Tittle writes the blog Keep the Faith and his post of his Father’s Day sermon on Gay Dads deserves a big tip of the hat. Don’t just keep the faith Rev. Matt, give it away and spread it around.
There are about 775,000 same-sex couples in the U.S. They live in every county in every state, are racially and ethnically diverse, have partners who depend upon each other financially, and actively participate in the U.S. economy. Census data also show that 20% of same-sex couples in the U.S. are raising children. However, same-sex parents have fewer economic resources to provide for their families than do their married counterparts: they have lower household incomes, on average, and lower rates of home ownership. All of these statistics hold true for Texas, where there are about 49,000 same-sex coupled households, and 17,000 children living in those households.
